Ins and Outs of Body Piercing

There are many reasons that we choose to get a body piercing. From wanting to make ourselves a bit more unique, a little sexier or attractive or to support a "shock value" or more hardcore perception of ourselves. The bottom line is, a pieced navel is sexy and if done right, can be a nice asset to one's physical representation and potential booster to one's self esteem. There are good reasons to get a piercing and it is everyone's right to do with their own body (once they're of age of course) what they choose.

The ramifications surrounding "to pierce or not too pierce" are widely versed. We have added a few links below for you to educate yourself prior to making a decision.

Education
There are plenty of places on the internet to educate yourself on body piercing. There are potential dangers and risks. Please use the links below to educate yourself on what to look for when seeking a body piercing company and what issues you need to consider over the long run.

Establishments
The selection of a proper establishment can determine the complete experience for you. Choosing an established business with a very clean shop, educated employees with adequate educational materials is important. This indicates that they not only know what they are doing, but they take it seriously. When it comes down to it, they are not just make a few bucks for piercing you, they are taking a risk with your health.

Please see the National Association of Professional Piercer's (NAPP) guide to "Choosing a Piercer"

Disease & Health Risks
The risks for disease are known. They are not extreme risks but you should know that outside of possible infection, there is a real chance for long term, debilitating disease. The importance of picking the right establishment as discussed above will go a long ways toward making certain you do not run unnecessary risks.

For more on potential disease, infection and heart risks please see the NAPP article on important health considerations.

Community
In some cases, you will not be allowed to donate blood for up to  one year after a piercing. If you do get a piercing, mark down the date. If this timeframe is important to you, you'll know when you are deemed "safe" to donate blood. Please remember that while you are at risk, you should not offer to donate blood.

Be smart, be safe, be cool.
